Fact check: 3 myths about an apprenticeship as an event specialist

Habegger | 28 July 2022

An apprenticeship as an event specialist with a Swiss Federal Vocational Education and Training diploma is anything but a conventional training course. There are many myths surrounding this profession: you meet famous people, travel often and see lots of different places! But how much of that is true, and where are appearances deceptive? We did a reality check with Ennio Staffiero, a third-year apprentice.

Best friends with the stars

Myth: As an event specialist, you meet global stars every day, know about their private problems, and party with them backstage.

Ennio Staffiero: “Of course, you meet stars when you’re at an event at a venue working backstage. But it’s not like we spend a lot of time with them or talk a great deal. We mostly only see the artists on the stage from a distance and watch their performance from the backstage area. When we have a production in our studios, then of course it’s a little different. In that case, you’re involved up close.”

Jet set lifestyle

Myth: As an event specialist, you wake up in a different country every day.

Our crew on the road in Paris.

Ennio Staffiero: “We don’t travel abroad for every production, as we mostly realise events in Switzerland. And as so often happens, many events also take place in parallel and there isn’t always an opportunity to travel to other countries. We apprentices have mainly spent the last two years working in studio productions due to the event ban, so it’s all the more enjoyable to finally emerge again and get the feel of real live events. For example, in June, I was able to travel to Paris for a prestigious sporting event and equip the hospitality area. In other words, we love it whenever we can travel as it’s always a great experience and a unique opportunity.”

School camp feeling

Myth: As an event specialist, you’re part of a close-knit crew.

Ennio Staffiero: “We are indeed like a small family. We spend a great deal of time with each other, particularly as we are often together for several days at an event, so we also spend our free time together. It’s not just fun, however: we’re there to work and not to have a holiday. But, of course, it’s more enjoyable when work colleagues become friends.”

Conclusion

On the whole, there’s a bit of reality behind each myth. An apprenticeship as an event specialist with a Swiss Federal Vocational Education and Training diploma offers many unique experiences, exciting encounters and priceless friendships. At the same time, it requires a high degree of flexibility, good physical condition and technical understanding. In other words, the apprenticeship is anything but conventional!

Each year, we train two new apprentices and support them throughout their four-year apprenticeship. We currently employ 10 apprentices.
