The Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) was shut down in December 2019 after 47 years of operation. We were in charge of organising every aspect of this historic and high-profile event for BKW. The client was adamant that the emphasis should be on the positive step towards a pioneering energy policy. At the same time, the event needed to be sympathetic to the feelings of farewell and sadness on the part of its workforce. Working closely with BKW, Habegger came up with a concept that took account of the various interests and emotions of everyone involved. We were able to create the perfect celebrations with four events over two days.
The highlight of the event, attended by 360 invited guests from the worlds of politics, business and industry, was the moment at which the power plant was switched off. Employees of the power plant experienced this landmark moment among themselves. The official event marking the decommissioning of the reactor was broadcast live on Swiss Television. On the same day, a media conference and a public event for the inhabitants of the surrounding communities were also held in the 30 x 55-metre dome tent on the grounds of the nuclear power plant. The following day, BKW expressed its gratitude with a further event for employees of the nuclear power plant to honour their hard work over the years.
Since the location was a high-security one, meticulous planning was essential. The site also no longer had any electricity or water supply. With its characteristic solutionsorientated approach, Habegger overcame these challenges and ensured the event went without a hitch.
